About KAIWU
We take the craft seriously. Not the vitrine.
KAIWU (开物) borrows its name from Tiangong Kaiwu, the 1637 Chinese encyclopedia of making. Our translation is looser: open things up, see how they are made.

Studio visit, Jingdezhen. No. 07 / Moon Jar.
What we sell
We work with inheriting craftspeople and small studios across China — cloisonné in Beijing, embroidery in Suzhou, bamboo weaving in Sichuan, lacquer and stoneware in Jingdezhen and beyond.
Alongside that, we carry a tight edit of independent design and street-current pieces that treat tradition as material, not costume.
How we choose
Technique first. We ask who made it, where, and with what. If a maker cannot answer those questions, the object does not make the cut.
We favour pieces that are useful, wearable or burnable over objects that exist only to be looked at. We buy in small numbers and we do not chase trends for the sake of volume.
Where we stand
We are a small, independent operation based in China, selling directly to the world. We are not a museum, a gallery or a heritage authority. We are a shop with a point of view — and a paper trail.
The house rules
Provenance, not folklore
Small batch by design
No museum glass
